Helpful resources:

Learn how to plan ahead to keep your stress levels lower, protect your mental well-being and preserve your stability during the busy period of the holidays. Members of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) have created a list of 59 ways to lower your stress level as you plan for the holidays and the long winter season. Families who live with mental health conditions have contributed these practical ideas to help each other cope, lower stress and experience more joy and wonder. Learn about these techniques in an online presentation by Heather Harlan and Sarah Berke.

In this virtual discussion, hear from Chad Rose, Associate Professor in the Special Education Department at MU, who discusses the effects of social media use on youth's mental health, especially in the context of the COVID pandemic and school closures.

Join us for a virtual panel discussion on parenting transgender youth. Parents and volunteer educators from The Center Project and Parents4Parents will discuss struggles faced by transgender and nonbinary youth within their families, and ways to practice trans-affirmative parenting. Co-sponsored with Children's Grove.

Holidays are supposed to be pleasant observances, but often bring an onslaught of stress. This is especially true for families and individuals who are also dealing with mental health situations, when a longer list of coping skills might be needed. The Columbia NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) support group some years ago compiled a list of "47 WAYS TO DE-STRESS YOUR HOLIDAYS." Join us in sharing those suggestions. We can all start NOW to plan for less stress over the winter holidays.

Representatives of the Children's Grove organization will explore the connection between mental health and substance use. Adults play a powerful role when it comes to positively influencing young people, and the panel will discuss how to start these conversations with youth. Participants will learn warning signs to look for, how to help and specific factors for working with different age groups. Co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Columbia-Boone County.
